Introduction - Who I am, job Availability, IT Industry, Pay and Salary
09:41
Welcome to the course! My name is Jed Guinto and I have been a Udemy trainer since 2014. I have close to 200,000 students, over 500,000 individual enrolments and almost 15,000 reviews! I'm so proud to share this course with you.
Typically, people take my course because of many reasons; either they've lost their job, looking for a new one, wanting to get into Analytics but don't know where to start or they want to upgrade from Microsoft Excel. This course will cover all these topics.
In this video we'll go through job opportunities in several countries, we'll discuss the possible pay/salary you can expect in 2021 and based on my experiences with meeting many people in the industry. We'll talk about the reasons for this massive increase and the skills you'll need to develop (and will learn in this course) in order to apply for these jobs and then succeed in them.
This course is not just going to teach how to create charts or build dashboards; you can literally take any course for that. Instead, this course aims to demonstrate to you and train you to understand how to apply this technology to real world problems and understand the mechanics of how solutions are created and deployed in a corporate setting.
Quick Demo - What's all the Fuss About?
06:29
We're going to do a quick demo of what Tableau is. Main reason is that some of you may have heard about it but not sure what it is, or you've never seen it in action or you're simply dying to see some beautiful visualizations or "viz's" as we call them in the industry.
We have a very simple data set here which contains the selling of office supplies. It's fictitious and you can think of Walmart in the U.S. as an example. I'll show you how quickly you can find insight in such a simple data set.
In just a few seconds we can solve questions such as:
Which states/cities are the most profitable?
Which categories and segments have the highest selling items?
How does the profit, quantity and sales fluctuate over time? Are there any patterns or cycles?
We'll also talk about Tableau vs. Excel; one of the most common questions I get. I think after seeing this video you'll notice exactly how they differ so ask yourself....how long would it take to have solved the questions above?

Tableau Public Download and Online Site
02:15
You may not know, but this is the third time I've upgraded this course. One of the biggest requests was to for students to be able to take this course without having to purchase the Full Tableau Desktop Suite.
Therefore, I've designed this course to be doable using the Free Version of Tableau which is referred to as Tableau Public.

Welcome to the Accelerator Program
00:59
Welcome to the Accelerator Program. This was designed to give a 1-hour quick start guide to people like myself who are too eager to use the software before taking all the training :)
Personally, I always like to get stuck into it mainly because I just love learning about software! So if you're like me, this section is definitely for you. It covers the most basic core concepts of:
How to load data sets into Tableau
How to create and format bar/column charts, line/area charts and pie charts
How to calculate Running Total and Moving Average using Quick Table Calculations
How to construct a dashboard using visualizations you've created
How export the dashboards to other programs
How to publish your dashboard to Tableau Public
With just these basic functions alone, you can go to work the next day and build real life solutions for your business or company. It's really that simple to use this software. No magic, no advanced training!
Loading your Data Set for the First Time - 2 Methods
05:21
Tableau works as a visualization tool that sits on top of your data. The data we have is an Excel spreadsheet you downloaded earlier and we're going to connect it to Tableau. Tableau itself actually does not hold data in a sense. Instead, it connects to your data source. This has the added benefit of protecting the raw data.
In Excel for example, once you start modifying the data by cleaning it or adjusted, you've effectively destroyed the raw source and replaced it with something else. In practice and in becoming an advanced analyst... WE NEVER DO THIS!!! As an analyst, we always keep multiple versions during development and find ways to protect the source. Therefore, in the rare case that Tableau crashes or fails, the raw information is protected.
Also, versions help us track progress, recreate solutions, evaluate the design and even prevent a catastrophic system crash! That last one has happened to me on a few occasions and each time the data sources were protected allowing us to continue work once systems had been rebooted. This easily saved the company I was working for 6-12 months of work and hundreds of thousands of dollars in development costs!
Your very first Bar and Column Chart
10:58
In this video we'll go through the basics of what Dimensions and measures are and how this along with data types determine the types of visualizations available to you. Measures are numerical values we can perform calculations on and Dimensions allow us to group those measures in the form of visualizations.
When introducing measures into your visualization, Tableau uses aggregates. Aggregates is a fancy term for "collecting" or "grouping". If you've used other programs in the past, you may be familiar with some already and you weren't aware. Some aggregates are:
SUM
MAXimum
MINimum
Average
Count
Median
Percentile
Standard Deviation
Variance
This is primarily how Tableau processes data. The main reason for this is that large data sets, it is far more efficient to present it as an aggregate rather than individual rows. This makes condensing large, complex data sets extremely easy and interpreting as users very quick.
Line Charts - Discrete vs Continuous
14:22
When working with line or area charts you'll run in the following terms: Discrete and Continuous lines. These definitions have been borrowed from mathematics and really describe the structure of a line chart. Each has its own benefits for different situations. It does take some practice on using these and over time it becomes much easier to use.
We'll also discuss briefly how Tableau decides on which visualizations to use as well as how granularity or level of detail comes into presenting line graph type data. This in particular will decide for you which visualization is best in terms of discrete or continuous type charts.
Finally, I'll show you the different options you have between line charts and area charts.
Pie Charts
10:50
Tableau makes creating visualizations extremely easy, especially for beginners. It has whats called a "Show me" button which allows you to create visualizations so easily! You simply select the Dimensions and Measures you want to visualize then select visualization type and voila!
In this particular video, we'll be using Show me to create Pie Charts. In my experience, in particular, for pie charts, this is the easiest method in my opinion. "Show me" also does the reverse in that to create a particular visualization, it tells you how many Dimensions and Measures you need.
Going back to pie charts, there is some formatting required in order to get the most out of pie charts and that includes adding labels so that your audience doesn't have to waste time referring to a Legend, adding a percentage value using Quick Table Calculation and finally adding the value itself. Following this, I'll show you how to format the text so that it doesn't look as flat and makes it easier for the audience to read.
Formatting Bar Charts and Pie Charts
10:43
The use of colours in Tableau is of extreme importance. Colours have meaning to us humans and we can use this to tell a story, grab attention, create emotion, signify importance and more. Clever use of colour is what makes an analyst great (you'll some amazing examples once we get to Tableau Public Gallery).
In this video, I'll show you in a bit more detail different options you have for using colour, how to change the size of the bars, how to customize the labels and finally how to customize the tooltip which can give a much more in-depth and human-like explanation of the data set.
